BUILDING MERCY SCHOOL IN THE SOLOMON ISLANDS
Mercy School was independently created in 2004 by a local Solomon Islander, Bev Komasi, to service the needs of the largely Malaitan people who had moved to the Burns Creek settlement of Honiara during The Tensions in 2003. When Canberran teacher Leigh Southwell moved to the Solomon Islands in 2014, she wanted to help in the local community, and to help in a school seemed like a perfect fit. Leigh worked with the school community, and with the assistance of Make a Mark Australia (an Australia Charity which helps fund small educational projects) and other fundraising activities built the school into a thriving educational institution.
